Are you a professional photographer with a creative eye, technical expertise and interest in museum collections?
In summer 2018, the Science Museum Group embarked on a review of its collections to provide a greater understanding of the items we care for, examining their significance in light of curatorial research. With 7.3 million items now in our care, the review provides the opportunity to ensure the national collection is sustainable and can be enjoyed by future generations.
As part of this review, we are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Photographer to join the Collections Services team to digitize selected collections at the Type Archive in Stockwell, on a fixed term contract for 7 months.
In this role, you will be responsible for creating enhanced photography of collection objects, copy 2D material from the collections archives and create on-brand communications photography for external affairs. You'll carry out post-production, and apply metadata making images accessible for all users. You will work closely with the Type Archive team to uphold collections care procedures.
Joining us, you will have experience of photography in a museum, fine art or heritage environment, along with technical proficiency in software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge and Capture One. You'll be a confident communicator and relationship-builder, able to communicate technical challenges to clients, influencing and negotiating to ensure successful shoots. Our team at Type Archive is a small one, so you'll need to be comfortable working autonomously, along with having an organised approach, ensuring you plan and prioritise work to ensure requests are delivered on time.
You will be offered excellent benefits including 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays (pro rata), BUPA medical and dental insurance, the ability to join our excellent contributory pension scheme, interest free loans and numerous staff discounts whilst developing your career in a world class museum group.
