Do you have experience of leading on capital projects? Do you have a collaborative and engaging approach?
In 2025, the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York celebrates 50 years of being open to the public and this also coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. To commemorate these momentous occasions, the Vision 2025 Masterplan seeks to deliver a programme of upgrades to both the National Railway Museum and sister museum, Locomotion, at Shildon. This programme is made up of a series of ambitious and innovative projects known as the Vision 2025 Masterplan. This coincides with the transformation of the underused land around the museum in York by the York Central Partnership, aiming to power York’s economy into the future.
To help us in this work, we are now seeking a Project Director to work within the Masterplan team leading on the delivery of projects and contribute significantly to the transformation of the visitor experience at both NRM and Locomotion.
The Project Director will be responsible for delivering projects assigned to them in the Vision 2025 programme through all stages from brief definition through construction to handover. You will work alongside fellow Project Directors and with the Programme Director to lead the Vision 2025 programme. Working with colleagues across the organisation, you will build and lead the internal teams across the programme to create a Vision 2025 programme team culture incorporating external consultant teams. You will maintain a complete overview and accountability for all aspects of the projects you involved in; working collaboratively to ensure full integration and alignment with the Masterplan vision, and with the museum teams, relevant stakeholders and the existing estate.
Joining us, you’ll have experience of delivering capital construction projects Client-side in a large public sector organisation. Experience with public realm, new build and fit out projects (including design and build contracts) will be helpful, along with a diplomatic, organised and collaborative approach. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at the National Railway Museum and to make an immediate impact in the progression and delivery of these cornerstone projects.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.
‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.
We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
