Do you have experience of carrying out research and communicating the history and current practice of space exploration and technology for non-specialist audiences? Are you able to work collaboratively with diverse teams?
We are recruiting for a committed and highly organised individual with a keen interest in the history and current practice of space exploration to join the Science Museum Group as a Curator of Space Technology on a permanent basis. This position is based at the Science Museum in London, with a hybrid working agreement which includes 2-3 days working from home.
As Curator of Space Technology, you will work with the Deputy Keeper for Technologies and Engineering in overseeing the Space Technology and related collections, which includes researching, reviewing and developing these collections. You will also work with colleagues across the Science Museum Group (SMG) responsible for related collections.
The Science Museum is planning a major programme of space-related projects over the next decade and you will play a crucial part in assisting the Deputy Keeper for Technologies and Engineering and colleagues across the Museum in helping to deliver these. They include temporary exhibitions, research projects, major acquisitions and a new permanent gallery.
Your other duties will include work to engage audiences with the Space Technology collection and related histories and current practices of space exploration. In addition, you will be helping SMG develop online content, adding to Collections Online and other web resources to engage audiences worldwide.
This role demands a high level of self-motivation and the ability to balance high-pressure exhibition delivery, object research work and narrative development with collections development and routine and necessary administrative tasks.
Joining us you will be enthusiastic with a proactive approach to working collaboratively with diverse teams. You will be able to use your initiative to suggest ideas and new ways of doing things, whilst also being open-minded and receptive to the ideas of others. You will have experience of carrying out research using varied sources and communicating the history and current practice of space exploration and technology for non-specialist audiences, for example in a blog, book, event, exhibition, website or digital game.
Crucially for this role you will have a track record of working collaboratively, with good attention to detail and the ability to build relationships with internal and external peers, subject specialists and external organisations.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.
‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.
We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
