Are you a strong communicator with experience of working with museum collections?
The National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) is developing a public programme around the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the BBC in 2022. In order to assist us in this work, we are now looking for a Curator of TV & Broadcasting to join us on a fixed-term maternity cover for 8 months.
The Curator of TV & Broadcasting will play a key role in leading the development of this programme, both in the museum and online. You will work with colleagues across the Science Museum Group (SMG) to explore the history and current practice of television and broadcasting technologies and create opportunities for engaging visitors with media, technology and engineering-related content across SMG public programming. You will work closely with the exhibitions team at NSMM and digital content teams across the group to develop the content and interpretation for the BBC 100 celebration, focusing on the BBC Heritage collection. As a Curator, you will advocate for embedding television and broadcasting collections in SMG’s forward programmes of temporary exhibitions and permanent galleries, and ensure a presence for them in SMG’s social and broadcast media outputs.
Joining us, you’ll have a good understanding of the current practice of history of science and/or media, with deeper knowledge in a particular subject area within this topic. You’ll have experience of working with museum collections, and will be able to communicate technical topics or theories to non-specialist audiences in an engaging and accessible way. You’ll have a collaborative approach to your work, with the ability to build strong working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. You’ll work in inspiring spaces within a collaborative, supportive and ‘open for all’ culture. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; BUPA medical and dental care; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave; career breaks and Trade Union recognition.
SMG are an equal opportunities employer and we value and celebrate diversity. We want to make sure we represent the society in which we work but recognise that the museum sector still has much work to do in this area. We welcome and encourage all applications whatever your individual background or sector, and we particularly encourage applications from applicants from marginalised or minority groups.
