Assistant Curator, Medicine Galleries project
Would you like to join the Science Museum's curatorial team, contributing to the development of major new permanent galleries?
We are looking for a motivated individual with a keen interest in medical history and current biomedical science to support and deliver collections-based content for the most ambitious element of the Science Museum's Masterplan. Opening in 2019, the Medicine Galleries will showcase our world-class medicine collections in a new location at the heart of the Museum.
Under direction, the Assistant Curator will contribute to the intellectual development and the delivery of the Medicine Galleries project. The post holder will enable and document the practical development of object displays and conduct content research to inform object and digital interpretation, plus associated online and publication outputs. Enhancing collection documentation also forms a key part of the role.
You will be self-motivated and able to work effectively with the project's curatorial team and be comfortable communicating with a range of people including colleagues, project participants and advisors, artists and researchers. You may be asked to supervise volunteers and/or interns as required, so the ability to organise and motivate others would be advantageous.
Previous collections experience, including handling and assessing objects, documentation and cataloguing is essential. Your attention to detail and ability to juggle a complex workload under time pressure will be second to none. Experience of working with collections databases would be a distinct advantage. You will be willing and able to balance object research work with routine and necessary administrative curatorial tasks.
The position is based at the Science Museum, but will require work to be carried out at Blythe House, the Science Museum's small object store in West London, and also at our large object store in Wroughton near Swindon.
Closing date for applications: 11 September 2017
Interviews will be held on 5 October 2017.
