To help us in this work, we are now seeking a Workshops & Traction Engineer to join the team at the National Railway Museum at York on a full time, permanent basis. The Workshop and Traction team works with colleagues from across SMG on conservation and restoration projects on iconic vehicles from the National Rail Collection, ensuring these vehicles are in suitable display condition to ignite our visitors’ curiosity. The team also assists with inspections on vehicles that are out on loan to other museums, heritage railways and other organisations. In addition, the team is responsible for maintaining the fleet of operational rail vehicles, making these vehicles available to offer visitors the thrill of seeing history and engineering in action or ensuring that they can assist with other vehicle moves. As Workshops & Traction Engineer, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the workshops at our sites at the National Railway Museum (York) and Locomotion. You will work closely with other colleagues in the team to deliver a wide range of safety critical functions, spanning across engineering and conservation activity in our workshops.
Joining us, you will be experienced in machine and/or rail vehicle repair. You will be experienced in using and operating a wide range of engineering equipment, and be knowledgeable on health and safety issues relating to this area of work. You will have an interest in the repair and maintenance of historic rail vehicles, both steam and diesel, and will be comfortable solving problems and demonstrating sound judgement under pressure. You will possess excellent communication skills and will love working with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Team working will come naturally to you, as will contributing to a supportive working environment.
